Why We Choose Hemp: A Note on Honest Materials

Why We Choose Hemp: A Note on Honest Materials

A note from the sisters at TISH

Hemp wasn’t the obvious choice. It was the honest one.
When we began building TISH, we weren’t looking for trends or shortcuts - we were looking for a fabric that felt grounded, unfussy, breathable, and true. Something that sat quietly on the skin yet held its shape with dignity.

We found that in hemp.

What Hemp Feels Like to Us

Hemp has a character that reveals itself slowly.
At first touch, it feels sturdy - almost too honest. Then, with each wear and wash, it softens in ways that feel lived-in, warm, familiar. It moves with you. It breathes with you. It ages beautifully.

There’s a calm elegance in knowing your clothes will only get better.

Why Not Linen?

People often ask why we didn’t choose linen - especially when hemp looks similar.

The truth is: we love linen. But hemp offered something more aligned with what we wanted TISH to stand for.

  • Hemp is stronger, which means the garment holds shape longer.

  • It softens more beautifully over time.

  • And most importantly, it requires less water and fewer resources to grow.

It wasn’t about rejecting linen. It was about choosing the material that felt most in tune with our values: long-lasting, low-impact, quietly luxurious.

Where Our Hemp Comes From

Our hemp is sourced from the foothills of Himachal Pradesh, where small communities continue the quiet, traditional cultivation of the crop.
The climate, the soil, the altitude - all of it gives the fibre a strength and purity we haven’t found elsewhere.

Working with Indian-grown hemp matters to us.
It keeps our supply chain closer.
It supports local farmers.
And it roots each garment in the landscape of the country we grew up in.

This connection - to land and to people - is an important part of why we choose hemp again and again.

The Cost of Being Natural

Natural fabrics come with honest costs.

Hemp takes time to weave.
Made-to-order production means no shortcuts, no mass efficiencies.

These choices make each piece more expensive - not because we’re adding margin, but because we’re avoiding the cheapness of cutting corners.

We could produce faster.
We could produce cheaper.
But the garment wouldn’t feel the same.
It wouldn’t hold the same intention.

For us, the price reflects the materials, the hands, the time, and the integrity behind each piece.

Why It’s Worth It

Hemp feels like clothing made with a conscience.
Not loud, not performative - just honest.

It stands the test of time.
It reduces waste.
It respects the earth.
And it respects the woman who wears it.

To us, that is real luxury: pieces made slowly, made thoughtfully, and made to last.

With intention, always.
